One of our recent clients contacted us after months of dealing with a persistent pigeon problem. Their roof had become overrun with pigeons, with nests and droppings everywhere. The birds were blocking roof drains, causing water to back up and flood during winter, and creating ongoing mess and maintenance issues around the property. Like many people, they had tried multiple solutions themselves, but the pigeons kept returning.

After being introduced to Urban Edge Wildlife Management, we attended the property, assessed the situation, and implemented an effective control strategy. According to the client, the results were immediate. The pigeons were gone after our first visit, and the ongoing issues they had been battling for months were finally resolved.

Unfortunately, this isn’t an uncommon story. Across Perth and regional Western Australia, pigeon problems often begin with a few birds roosting on a roof or commercial building. Left unmanaged, those small issues can quickly escalate into blocked gutters, property damage, health risks, and large-scale infestations that become far more difficult and costly to resolve.

When a Small Issue Becomes a Big One

Most property owners don’t realise how quickly a couple of birds can turn into a real infestation. Pigeons breed several times a year, and once they’ve identified a safe spot, they bring others with them. Their offspring nest nearby, and within a season or two, you’ve got an established colony that won’t leave easily.

The early signs are easy to miss:

  • A few droppings on the driveway or signage
  • The occasional bird sitting on the roof or gutter
  • Soft cooing sounds from above the ceiling
  • Small bits of nesting material near eaves or solar panels

By the time the noise becomes constant or the mess unavoidable, the problem has usually been developing for months.

What’s Really at Stake

The damage and risks tend to creep up on people. We’ve inspected homes where the ceiling had started staining from droppings above the plasterboard, and warehouses where blocked gutters had caused thousands of dollars in water damage during a wet winter.

The most common issues we deal with include:

Health Hazards

Droppings can carry diseases like salmonella, histoplasmosis, and psittacosis. Nests attract mites and parasites that work their way into ceilings and air conditioning systems. For families, restaurants, and aged care facilities, this is more than just unpleasant.

Structural Damage

Acidic droppings slowly corrode roofing materials, paint, signage, and solar panels. The damage isn’t always visible from the ground, which is part of why it gets ignored for so long.

Blocked Gutters and Drainage

Nesting debris is one of the most common causes of blocked downpipes we come across. During WA’s wet months, the resulting overflow can cause water damage to ceilings, walls, and electrical systems.

Fire Risk Around Solar Panels

Dry twigs, feathers, and droppings packed around solar panels and electrical fixtures are a genuine fire hazard, particularly heading into summer. It’s something insurance assessors are paying more attention to as well.

Noise and Contamination

Constant cooing, scratching, and flapping above bedrooms or offices wears people down. Add the smell from droppings and old nests in roof cavities, and it becomes a daily problem.

How Professional Bird Removal Actually Works

Professional bird removal isn’t about chasing birds off the roof.

A professional inspection looks at:

  • Where the birds are nesting and roosting
  • How they’re getting into roof cavities or hidden spaces
  • What food and water sources are drawing them in
  • Which parts of the building are most vulnerable

From there, the actual removal is done safely and humanely, in line with Australian wildlife regulations. Nests are cleared, the area is cleaned and disinfected, and any damage is assessed.

But that’s only half the job. Without proper proofing, the birds will be back within weeks.

Long-Term Prevention That Actually Holds Up

This is where the real difference between DIY and professional work shows up. Long-term bird proofing is about closing off opportunities, not just removing what’s already there.

The systems we install most often across Perth, Rockingham, Mandurah, and Fremantle include:

  • Bird spikes on ledges, parapets, signage, and lighting
  • Roof proofing to seal off cavity entry points and gaps around fixtures
  • Mesh barriers under solar panels to stop nesting underneath
  • Solar panel protection designed to handle WA’s coastal conditions
  • Ongoing maintenance inspections to catch any new issues early

Done properly, these solutions last for years and pay for themselves in avoided damage and repairs.

Real Properties, Real Results

We’ve worked on everything from family homes in the suburbs to large warehouses in industrial areas. The properties are different, but the principle is the same: address the cause, not just the symptoms.

For commercial pigeon control across Perth, this approach is especially important. Businesses can’t afford repeated infestations, customer complaints, or compliance issues. Getting it right the first time saves money and protects reputation.
